LESVOS PRIVATE TOURS

Petrified Forest
& West Lesvos

Where the Forest Turned to Stone

The far west of Lesvos — where a twenty-million-year-old volcanic forest stands frozen in stone, a hilltop monastery looks out across the Aegean, and the coast ends at Sappho's birthplace. A long, scenic day through the wildest side of the island.
Private tour — exclusive vehicle hire. Price covers the entire group, not per person.
Water and juice are provided for all travellers.

Antissa village square with stone houses, western Lesvos
Stop 1

Antissa Village (optional)

A quiet inland village above the western plains, with stone houses, a shaded square, and the slow rhythm of a place that refused to change. A short stop for coffee or a walk before we climb to the monastery above.

Agiou Ipsilou Monastery on the summit of Mount Ordymnos, Lesvos Geopark
Stop 2

Agiou Ipsilou Monastery

A 9th-century monastery built on the 511-metre summit of Mount Ordymnos, a dormant volcano in the Lesvos Geopark. The courtyard looks out over the entire western half of the island — the best place on Lesbos to take a photograph. Inside, a small museum holds icons, manuscripts, and treasures from a thousand years of monastic life.

Fossilised tree trunks in the Petrified Forest Park of Lesbos, UNESCO Geopark
Stop 3

Petrified Forest Park of Lesbos

A UNESCO Global Geopark and one of the rarest geological monuments in the world. Twenty million years ago a volcanic eruption buried a subtropical forest in ash; the trees turned to stone where they stood. Today, fossilised trunks rise from the open landscape — some still rooted, some toppled, all preserved in extraordinary detail. An open-air walk through deep time.

Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, Sigri village
Stop 4

Petrified Forest Museum

In the seaside village of Sigri, the Natural History Museum tells the story of how the forest was made and unmade. Fossil leaves, ancient root systems, and the largest petrified trunks on the island — alongside the geology of Lesvos and the eruption that shaped its western half. The museum also holds an earthquake simulator that recreates real earthquakes at their actual magnitudes. A short, unforgettable few seconds on the same Richter scale the earth itself moved at.

Skala Eressos dark sand beach and clear water, southwest Lesvos
Stop 5

Skala Eressos Beach

A long stretch of dark sand on the southwest coast — three kilometres of open shoreline backed by low hills. Some of the cleanest water on the island, and the clearest sunset on Lesvos.

Skala Eressos waterfront village, birthplace of Sappho, Lesvos
Stop 6

Skala Eressos

The seaside village of Skala Eressos — birthplace of Sappho, the lyric poet of antiquity, and one of the most quietly storied places on the island. Tavernas along the waterfront, a small chapel by the sand, and the right place to slow down before the road back east. Each September the village hosts the International Eressos Women's Festival — two weeks of music, art, and gatherings in honour of Sappho herself.
